…The persistent and blissful attraction of painting seems to be that, like thought, its edges are invisible to itself. Somewhere between communication and marginal expression, this dance-with-European-processed-meat takes place. The studio, here, is receptacle for inexplicable impulses and for graphic intent. I was young, I was so busy trying to be a feminist that once I’d seen Bikini Kill and seen The Amps and got over the fact that Sourpuss werent actually going to surprise-play the GC SUMMERSAULT (why would they?), I was exhausted.
I remember thinking: “I like Sonic Youth, but there are too many men in the band. THE BEASTIE BOYS ARE ALL MEN. I am going to nap in this tent.”
I didn’t know men could be so cool back then.
